How much does a business automation consultant cost in 2026?
Business automation consultants typically charge $40-150 an hour as freelancers and $100-250 an hour at consultancies in the US, and about £540 a day as UK contractors. Our price is published: a $2,500 (£2,000) ops audit, then a monthly plan from $2,000 (£1,600) that includes your first build and looking after it.
| Who you hire | US | UK |

Ranges are typical, compiled from published rate guides, not quotes. Freelance tiers are from goLance, September 2026; boutique rates combine Codewave, August 2026 ($100-149 outside a retainer) and Layer3 Labs, September 2026 ($125-250). UK day rates are medians for the six months to 15 October 2026 from IT Jobs Watch for automation consultants and n8n. Other UK figures convert the US bands at roughly $1.25 to £1.
What does an automation consultant do?
They find the manual steps between your apps - copying a new client from the CRM into the accounting app, chasing a file, posting the same update in three places - and set up software to do them. Most work in a no-code platform such as Zapier, Make or n8n; some write code when the job outgrows those tools. The good ones also check the result with the people who do the work, and arrange for someone to watch it once it's live.
What is a reasonable hourly rate for an automation consultant?
Rates follow experience more than tool. goLance, September 2026 lists freelance AI and automation consultants at $40-65 an hour for juniors, $65-120 for mid-level (with $93 as the mid-level market rate), $120-200 for seniors and $200-350 for experts with a niche specialty.
Consultancies and agencies charge more per hour because you're paying for a team, project management and some continuity. Codewave, August 2026 puts boutique providers at $100-149 an hour for scoped work outside a retainer, and Layer3 Labs, September 2026 puts boutique agencies at $125-250.
In the UK, the median automation consultant contract day rate is £538 (IT Jobs Watch, October 2026). That's roughly £70 an hour across a normal day, though most freelancers working with small businesses quote by the project rather than the day.
How much does Zapier charge?
Before any consultant's fee, there's the platform. Zapier's Free plan includes 100 tasks a month and two-step Zaps only. Professional starts at $19.99 a month billed annually ($29.99 monthly) for 750 tasks, and Team at $69 a month billed annually ($103.50 monthly) for 2,000 tasks (Zapier, October 2026).
Why does Zapier get expensive? Because every action in every run counts as a task. A five-step Zap that runs on every new project uses five tasks each time, so a busy workflow climbs through the plans quickly. Is there a cheaper alternative? n8n's cloud plans start at €20 a month for 2,500 workflow executions, billed annually, and a whole workflow run counts once (n8n, October 2026). Make is the other common option; check its live pricing page, as the plan prices weren't shown when we looked.
How much does a Zapier expert cost?
Zapier runs a directory of certified Solution Partners, but it doesn't publish a rate card. When we checked the Zapier Experts directory, October 2026, every partner listed carried a Platinum badge, and only a handful stated prices on their profile. One partner, XRAY, listed $250 an hour for reserved engineer time and a $15,000 30-day design sprint; another, Flow Digital, listed a 75-minute implementation session for $297. Most offer a free discovery call and quote after it.
For one-to-one help, Codementor, October 2026 lists Zapier experts at $10-95 per 15-minute session - roughly $40-380 an hour if you book a full hour. That spread is the honest picture of the Zapier market: a lot of capable freelancers at the lower end, and certified partners who scope bigger projects at the top.
We looked for a reliable UK Zapier day rate. IT Jobs Watch does track one, but only four rates were quoted in the six months to October 2026, so we've left it out.
What do Make.com consultants charge?
Make has a partner directory with three tiers - Platinum, then Gold, then Silver - but, like Zapier, it publishes no rates or minimum budgets (Make partners directory, October 2026). You submit a project request through a partner's profile and they come back with a scope and price. In practice Make specialists price close to Zapier specialists at the same experience level, so use the freelance and boutique bands above as your guide and ask for a fixed quote.
How much does an n8n consultant cost, and is n8n actually free?
n8n is newer to the consulting market. Its expert partner programme is still a small pilot, growing slowly from a founding group of agencies and system integrators in the UK and Ireland, Northern Europe and North America, and it shows no rates (n8n experts, October 2026). The best UK signal is contract work: IT Jobs Watch, October 2026 puts the median n8n day rate at £500, up 25% on a year earlier - but from only eight quoted rates, so treat it as a rough marker.
n8n can be self-run on your own server or used as a cloud service, starting at €20 a month for 2,500 executions (n8n pricing, October 2026). n8n's pricing page says a standard self-hosted version is available on GitHub, so the software can cost nothing - but someone has to set up, secure and update the server it runs on, which is where consultant time goes. Its Business plan is €667 a month billed annually and currently only for self-run installs (n8n pricing, October 2026). That flexibility is why technical consultants like it, and also why it needs more looking after than Zapier.
Upwork vs a partner directory vs a specialist: where should you hire?
Marketplaces
(Upwork, Codementor, Contra) are the cheapest and fastest route for a well-defined job: "connect our form to our CRM and post a Slack message". You'll find plenty of competent people in the $40-120 an hour band. The risk is that they're gone once the job is done.
Partner directories
(Zapier, Make, n8n) give you vetted specialists in one tool. Good when you've already chosen the platform and want someone who knows it deeply. Expect higher prices and project minimums.
Specialist consultancies
that work with one kind of business - agencies, accounting firms, law firms - cost more per hour but less to explain things to, because they already know how your work moves. That's where we sit, for people businesses - businesses that sell their people's expertise and time: agencies, accountants, lawyers, consultants.
How much does business automation consulting cost?
For one workflow between two or three apps, most freelancers quote somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars. A dev shop or agency pricing a single automation or integration typically charges $2,000-5,000 (£1,600-4,000), the market range we list for our one-click research extension - a tool that means Fame's bookers stopped copy-pasting guest profiles into briefs, a job they do dozens of times a week.
Then add the platform fees above. Those fees are yours, they last as long as the automation runs, and they rise with volume.
When should a no-code automation become code?
No-code tools are brilliant for getting started. They get harder to live with when:
The task count bill keeps climbing.
Every step in every run counts. A busy workflow can push you up several plans.
The logic gets complicated.
Ten branches, lookups and retries in a visual builder become hard for anyone but the original builder to follow.
It's doing something client-facing.
A portal or status page your clients log into needs to look like your brand and work every time.
Nobody knows how it works.
If the one person who built it has left, it's already a risk.
At that point a small custom tool, running on your own accounts, is often cheaper over three years and much easier to keep working. Our client status page is a good example - the kind of build that typically costs $8,000-18,000 (£6,000-14,000), and it meant Fame's account managers retired the Friday status email.
Is AI replacing automation consultants?
No - it's changing what they spend time on. AI tools make building faster, so less of the bill should go on wiring and more on understanding how your firm works and keeping things running. That's the same way we think about your team: the point of automation in a people business is to give your people the hours back for the work only they can do, not to do without them.
Who maintains an automation after handover?
This is the question most automation quotes skip. The freelancer finishes, hands over the login and moves on. Then:
- An app changes how it works and the automation stops - often silently.
- Someone renames a field in the CRM and records start landing in the wrong place.
- The team asks for "just one more step" and nobody knows how to add it.
Without someone watching, a broken automation can run wrong for weeks before anyone notices, and once your people stop trusting a tool they go back to doing it by hand. That gap - after the build, before anything breaks - is exactly what our monthly plan exists for. Your automations are monitored and fixed, and we keep improving them as you ask. It's also why we price looking after a tool from day one rather than as an afterthought.
The tools we built for our own team at Fame, and still look after, have given that team back 5,460 hours as of 14 October 2026, growing by about 345 hours a week.
How does Forge price automation work?
Every price is on our pricing page. A two-week ops audit is $2,500 (£2,000) and credited to your first month. Then a monthly plan at $2,000, $3,500 or $7,500 a month (£1,600, £2,800 or £6,000) with your first build included - built, tested and rolled out with training for your team. The automations run on your own accounts, so you own them and pay those tool costs directly; AI usage is billed at cost. When should you not hire us?
You have one simple Zap to build
and you're comfortable looking after it. Hire a freelancer for a few hundred dollars - it's the right call.
You already have an in-house ops person who loves Zapier or Make.
Give them time and a course; you may not need anyone.
You want to own and maintain the code yourself
with your own developer. A one-off build is cheaper.
You're a large company with an IT team and a procurement process.
A bigger partner on the Zapier or Make directory will fit your process better.
